Dr. Satykam Mohapatra, MD (Neuropsychiatry), FIPS

Dr. Satykam Mohapatra is a neuro-psychiatrist of Odisha associated with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of various neuro-psychiatry problems. He is Practicing in Neuropsychiatry for past 10 years.

His approach for treatment of various neuropsychiatric problems is a combination of pharmacological (with medications) and non-pharmacological (like counseling, psychotherapy) methods.

Dr. Satykam Mohapatra also has a prominent presence in the all form of media including print, electronic and social media .He has played a key role in enchancing the image of neuropsychiatry problems in various parts of the country and his views are very well accepted and appreciated.

Sleep problems

Insomnia- inability to get to sleep or sleep well at night. Narcolepsy -Excessive, uncontrollable daytime sleepiness. Other problems of sleep include- walking while sleeping, talking while sleeping, excessive dreaming while sleeping, teeth grinding while sleeping. Sleep paralysis.

Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms and legs, loss of consciousness, biting of tongue, frothing from mouth, bending of neck, blinking of eyes etc.

Sexual problems

Sexual dysfunctions include lack or absence of  sexual desire or libido, erectile dysfunction (impotence), premature ejaculation, delays or absence of orgasm in both male and female.

Panic Disorder

Sudden periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, sweating, shaking, shortness of breath, numbness, or a feeling that something terrible is going to happen. The maximum degree of symptoms occurs within minutes. There may be ongoing worries about having further attacks and avoidance of places where attacks have occurred in the past.

Phobias

Phobia is a persistent and excessive fear of an object or situation. It includes fear of situations from which it would be difficult to escape such being in a traffic cinema hall, lift, open space, shopping mall etc. Phobia also includes excessive fear of animal , blood, injection, insects etc. Social phobia, or social anxiety is a profound fear of public humiliation and being singled out or judged by others in a social situation

Depression

Depression has features of Persistent sadness of mood, Feelings of hopelessness, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness, loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities, decreased energy or fatigue, difficulty concentrating, remembering, difficulty sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping, appetite and weight changes, thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may seem like they have lost touch with reality. Patient develops suspiciousness towards others, fearfulness, irritability, isolating oneself and withdrawing from others, hearing voices, seeing things, or smelling things others can’t perceive, decreased sleep, poor self-care.

OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and behaviours (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over. Patient has features of excessive cleaning ,hand washing , ordering and arranging things in a particular, precise way, repeatedly checking things, repeated counting.

Headaches

Migraines- Intense throbbing pain on just one side of the head. The person may experience a heightened sensitivity to light, sound, and smell. Nausea and vomiting are also common. Tension type headaches(TTH)- A dull, constant pain felt on both sides of the head associated with tenderness of the face, head, neck, and shoulders a feeling of pressure behind the eyes, sensitivity to light and sound.

Bipolar disorders

There is repetitive episodes of manic and depressive episodes. In manic episodes individual behaves or feels abnormally energetic, happy, or irritable, need for sleep is usually reduced, short attention span, racing thoughts, increased goal-oriented activities, agitation, or exhibition of behaviours characterized as impulsive or high-risk, such as hypersexuality or excessive spending.

Anxiety disorders

Excessive anxiety or worry, most days for at least 6 months, about a number of things such as personal health, work, social interactions, and everyday routine life circumstances. The fear and anxiety can cause significant problems in areas of their life, such as social interactions, school, and work. Other complaints include- feeling restless, difficulty concentrating; mind going blank, irritable, sleep problems, easily fatigued.

Dhat syndrome

Dhat syndrome is a condition in which male patients report that they suffer from premature ejaculation or impotence, and believe that they are passing semen in their urine.  Other somatic symptoms like weakness, easy fatigability, palpitations, insomnia, low mood, guilt and anxiety are often present. Patients sometimes report a subjective feeling that their penises have shortened. These symptoms are usually associated with an anxious and dysphoric mood state.

Stress related disorders

Trauma- and stressor-related disorders involve exposure to a traumatic or stressful event. Two of the trauma-related disorders are acute stress disorder (ASD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Avoidance of activities and situations reminiscent of the trauma, emotional blunting or "numbness", a sense of detachment from other people, autonomic hyperarousal with hypervigilance, an enhanced startle reaction and insomnia, marked anxiety and depression and, occasionally, suicidal ideation.

ADHD, ODD

ADHD(Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)- It’s a childhood behavioural problem. Child has high activity levels, limited attention spans, not able to stay seated (in classroom, workplace), runs about or climbs where it is inappropriate, unable to play or do leisure activities quietly, talks too much, doesn’t pay close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in school or homework, child is easily distracted. ODD- Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a childhood disorder in which child is hostile, disobedient, easily loses temper, argues with adults,  blames others for his or her mistakes , poor in study.

Dementia

Patient with dementia has decline in memory or other thinking skills severe enough to reduce a person's ability to perform everyday activities. Alzheimer's disease, Vascular dementia are predominant types of dementia. Memory problems, communication and language, ability to focus and pay attention, reasoning and judgment, irritability are common features of dementia.
